Filtering the air in a large building is different from filtering the air in a home. Higher air volumes, varied contaminants, and demanding environments mean commercial systems typically layer several filter types together. Understanding the stages — and the filters that serve them — makes it easier to build an effective strategy.
The three filtration stages
Most commercial filtration follows a staged approach:
- Pre-filtration captures larger particles first, protecting more efficient (and more expensive) downstream filters and extending their service life.
- Intermediate filtration handles a broad range of finer particles and is the workhorse of many HVAC systems.
- Final-stage filtration provides the highest efficiency for environments that demand very clean air.
Different filter types are suited to different stages. Here are the main categories in the AirPurete commercial catalog.
Pleated filters
Extended-surface pleated panel filters are a versatile, widely used option. AirPurete™ pleated filters are available in MERV 8, 11, and 13 for commercial, industrial, and residential HVAC, balancing dust-holding capacity with low pressure drop. They frequently serve as pre-filters or general-purpose filters.
Bag (pocket) filters
Bag filters use pocket-style media to provide high dust-holding capacity and a large filtration surface. AirPurete offers synthetic bag filters across a range of MERV efficiencies for applications that demand a high degree of air cleanliness, making them a common choice for intermediate filtration in air handlers.
Rigid box filters
Rigid box filters combine an extended-surface design with a rugged frame, making them well suited to systems with variable airflow. The AirPurete rigid box filter pairs a metal frame with synthetic media and is a dependable option for variable-air-volume (VAV) systems.
Mini-pleat & V-bank filters
Mini-pleat and V-bank (V-cell) designs pack a large amount of media into a compact filter, which keeps pressure drop low even at higher efficiencies. AirPurete V-cell / V-bank filters deliver high efficiency in a space-saving format for systems that need clean air without excessive airflow resistance.
Deep-pleat cell filters
Deep-pleat (ASHRAE cell) filters use rigid, extended-surface construction to maximize media area. The AirPurete deep-pleat cell filter is built for air handlers and built-up filter banks where durability and capacity matter.
HEPA filters
HEPA filters provide the highest level of particle capture for final-stage, critical-environment filtration. AirPurete offers HEPA options such as the HEPA deep-pleat and HEPA V-cell designs, suited to hospitals, cleanrooms, and laboratories where very clean air is essential. Because HEPA media is dense, it is typically protected by pre-filters to preserve its service life.
More than the filter: sizing and configuration
In commercial systems, results depend not only on the filter but on how it is installed. Filters are held in frames or built-up banks, and gaps or poor seals let air — and particles — bypass the media. Getting the size and holding frame right, and making sure filters seat properly, is as important as selecting the correct type. When filters are combined in stages, each stage should be sized so the system maintains the airflow it needs.
Filter service life and total cost
In commercial systems, the purchase price of a filter is only part of the story. Filters load over time and are replaced on a schedule that depends on the environment and how much the system runs. Pre-filters play an important role here: by capturing larger particles first, they help protect more efficient downstream filters and extend their usable life. Thinking in terms of the whole filtration strategy — rather than any single filter — usually leads to better performance and more predictable maintenance over the life of the system.
Matching filtration to the environment
The right combination depends on the space. A commercial office may be well served by pleated pre-filters and bag or V-bank intermediate filters, while healthcare settings, cleanrooms, and laboratories often add HEPA final-stage filtration. Industrial and specialized facilities vary widely and may require purpose-built strategies.
A simple way to think about it
- Use pre-filters to catch large particles and protect downstream filters.
- Use intermediate filters (bag, V-bank, rigid box) for everyday performance.
- Add HEPA final filters only where the environment truly requires them.
